Born in New Orleans on Mardi Gras Day, Bill Coleman was reared in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was admitted to the bar in 1967, after receiving his B.A. in pre-law and J.D. from the University of Alabama. While an undergraduate, Bill was president of Omicron Delta Kappa, vice-president of Jasons Senior Honor Society, and president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Social Fraternity. In law school, Bill was president of the Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity, and was an editor of the Alabama Law Review. After finishing law school, Bill served as a lieutenant and company commander in the U.S. Army, military intelligence, during which time he was stationed in Japan and was awarded an Army Commendation Medal.
Bill is an integral part of the law firm of Capell & Howard and formerly served the firm as managing director. Bill's litigation practice has included a variety of matters, including class actions, anti-trust, personal injury, commercial, consumer and product liability litigation. Over fifty percent of his practice over the past thirty plus years, however, has been devoted to representing companies involved in the construction industry. Bill has gained local, state and national prominence for his skills in the field of construction law. He is one of only one hundred sixty attorneys in the nation who is a fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers. He has been listed for the past seventeen years in The Best Lawyers in America in the construction litigation category and has been listed in Alabama Super Lawyers in the Alternative Dispute Resolution category since its inaugural issue.
In addition to his litigation practice, Bill has been significantly engaged in an alternative dispute resolution practice, particularly arbitration and mediation. Bill has been involved in over one hundred fifty arbitrations as an advocate or arbitrator. He is recognized as an accomplished mediator of disputes, including multi-party disputes arising from construction projects. Bill has been a member of the Alabama Supreme Court Commission on Dispute Resolution since it was formed in 1994 and has served a two-year term as its chairperson. He is also significantly involved in professional, civic and cultural associations within the city and state.
