Employment & Labor Relations

The Firm's employment and labor attorneys provide a full panoply of services to clients requiring assistance in these areas. Their work is predominantly in the representation of management, exclusively so in the area of labor law. Six lawyers devote a majority of their time in preventing, resolving, and defending, if necessary, personnel problems and claims. Attorneys in the Employment Section are currently defending numerous class actions for the State of Alabama and other clients, including the Crum litigation, which is the largest institutional class action ever filed in the United States.

In employment law, the Firm provides assistance with respect to creating and perfecting employment policies, drafting handbooks and manuals, assuring compliance with various state and federal employment laws, and defending clients against charges, claims, and suits by employees. The Firm's attorneys have many years experience in representations of that nature and have defended most of the types of claims from Fair Labor Standards Act claims to the Office of Federal Contracts Compliance Programs claims to Title VII and Constitutional claims and associated state law contract and tort claims.

In the area of labor relations, the Firm offers a range of services to management, including preventing and resisting union organization, handling contract negotiations and arbitration, and representing employers before the National Labor Relations Board and in the courts.

The Firm's attorneys are frequent speakers on labor and employment subjects and are active in the Labor and Employment Section of the Alabama State Bar. One member of the Firm is the former chairman of the Section. They hold numerous academic and professional honors.
