Alabama Remains Closed For Now

By: Richard F. Calhoun

Today, Governor Kay Ivey announced that the State’s stay-at-home order will remain in place, at least through April 30. The Governor faces growing pressure to begin “re-opening” the State’s economy. Advocates for easing coronavirus-related restrictions include the Small Business Commission’s Emergency Task Force. Lieutenant  Governor Will Ainsworth leads this task force. Last Friday, it released its Phase One of its Reopen Alabama Responsibly Report. The report includes recommendations that the Governor allow certain non-essential businesses to reopen. For example, it urges the Governor to allow retail stores, restaurant dining rooms, childcare facilities, and close-contact service providers such as hair salons to reopen immediately. The task force opined that these businesses could use safety measures designed to protect employees and customers. Adding to the pressure on Governor Ivey, Governors of Tennessee and Georgia recently announced partial re-openings.
